Dynamic property assignment

Definition

The IFC model has a system for dynamically assigning new properties to objects. There are two categories of properties that can be dynamically attached to IFC objects:

1. Property objects
   These are objects that are defined in the IFC model that can be dynamically attached to other objects. Manufacturer and Occupant are examples of property objects
2. PropertySets
   PropertySets are a mechanism for dynamically adding any information to IFC objects, thus extending the information content of the IFC model. In essence PropertySets define values and the semantic meaning of the values. In order to be useful the semantics have to be agreed upon or the meaning of the values will not be understood.
   
   1. Pre defined PropertySets
      The IAI has defined and published a set of PropertySets that can be used with IFCs. Whenever these PropertySets are useful they should be used, because the semantics for these properties have already been defined.
   2. Extension PropertySets
      Whenever the IFC model does not contain some information that information can be attached to the model using extension PropertySets. It is very important that whenever this is done the extensions are documented and distributed to other implementers. Otherwise we can end up in a situation where we have multiple extensions that do the same thing.
